ALPS CUP 5 - ST. MORITZ - LONGTZE CUP

Am Wochenende vom 29./30. Juni fand der 5. Act des Longtze Alpencups 2024 mit 13 teilnehmenden Booten in St. Moritz statt. Neben den üblichen Teilnehmern aus Deutschland und der Schweiz nahmen sogar zwei Teams aus Tschechien an diesem Anlass teil.

Während am Freitag für das Einwassern und vereinzelte Trainings mehrheitlich noch ein böiger Nordwind vorherrschte, versprach das Wochenende mit einer grosswetterbestimmenden Südströmung und der Chance auf etwas Sonne und Thermik schöne Segelbedingungen.

So wurden wir am Samstag auch nicht enttäuscht, als bereits zum Skippermeeting pünktlich um 10:30 ein zwar etwas böiger, aber kräftiger Südwind mit 9-12 Kts wehte. Die Wettfahrtleitung des Segelclub St. Moritz wollte anfangs zwar noch etwas zuwarten, bis ein allfälliger Malojawind etwas stabilere Windbedingungen erlaubte, als dann aber die Sonne zusehends von einigen Wolken verdeckt wurde, schickte uns die Wettfahrtleitung kurz vor dem Mittag auf das Wasser.

Bei schönem, aber stark drehendem Wind aus südlicher Richtung wurden insgesamt 4 Wettfahrten gesegelt, wobei der Wind gegen das Ende immer mehr nach rechts drehte und vor allem die Zielkreuz im 4. Lauf zu einem beinahe Anlieger wurde. Dies veranlasste die Wettfahrleitung, uns in der Hoffnung auf eine mehr südliche Windrichtung nach dem 4. Lauf zurück an Land zu schicken. Als sich dieser erhoffte Winddreher allerdings nicht einstellen wollte, wurde mit der Flagge AP über A die 5. Wettfahrten für diesen Regattatag abgesagt, was einigen Crews die willkommene Möglichkeit gab, vereinzelte kleinere Schäden an Ihren Booten zu reparieren.

GER824 (Wetfeet) kam mit den anspruchsvollen Windbedingungen des ersten Tages am besten zurecht und führte mit vier Laufsiegen klar das Zwischenklassement an, vor SUI825 (shensu), welche in der zweiten Wettfahrt mit einem 8. Rang ihr Streichresultat einfuhren.

Nach einem sympathischen Abendessen im Segelclub und einer gewittrigen Nacht begrüsste uns der Sonntag morgen erneut mit einem grosswetterbestimmten Wind aus südlicher Richtung, wobei die tieferen Wolkenzüge immer wieder Winddrehern mit sich brachten und sich die vereinzelten Sonnen­strahlen mit gelegentlichem Nieselregen abwechselten. So gestaltete sich das Auslegen einer fairen Regattabahn für das Regattakommittee auf diesem kleinen See als äusserst anspruchsvoll. Nachdem Startlinie und Bahnmarken immer wieder auf Windänderungen ausgerichtet werden mussten, konnten wir schlussendlich aber auch am Sonntag bei 2-4 Bft wieder vier schöne Regattaläufe absolvieren. Hier teilten sich GER824 und SUI825 mit je zwei Laufsiegen die Führung.

Mit insgesamt sechs Laufsiegen und einem 3. Rang als Streichresultat konnte Eckhard Kaller und seine Crew mit GER824 diese Wettfahrt ganz klar für sich entscheiden. Jarmo Wieland und Crew auf SUI825 belegten den ehrenvollen 2. Schlussrang, gefolgt von Thomas Begher auf GER832. In den folgenden Rängen liegen die Punktzahlen nach insgesamt 8 Wettfahrten zum Teil recht nahe beieinander, was davon zeugt, dass eine konstante Leistung über 8 Regattaläufe bei den anspruchsvollen Bedingungen nur ganz wenigen Teams vorbehalten war.

Auch wenn bekanntlich die Longtze Regatta am Gardasee im September den Saison-Höhepunkt darstellt, steht diesem das diesjährige Regatta-Wochenende in St. Moritz in keiner Weise nach. Dazu haben das schöne, internationale Teilnehmerfeld, die anspruchsvollen, aber spannenden Windbe-dingungen, die einmalige Kulisse des Engadins und nicht zuletzt auch der beispielhafte und jederzeit sympathische Einsatz des Regattakommittees des Segelclub St. Moritz beigetragen – ganz herzlichen Dank!

The 5th Act of the Longtze Alpencup 2024 took place in St. Moritz with a fleet of 14 boats on the weekend of June 29/30. In addition to the usual participants from Germany and Switzerland, even two teams from the Czech Republic took part in this event.

While on Friday, for the launching of the boats and some occasional trainings, there was still a gusty north wind, the weekend promised beautiful sailing conditions with a dominating wind direction from the south and the chance for some sun and thermals winds.

So we were quite pleased on Saturday morning, when a somewhat gusty, but strong southerly wind with 9-12 Kts welcomed us for the skipper's meeting at 10:30am. The race committee of the St. Moritz Sailing Club initially wanted to wait a little longer until a possible Maloja wind allowed for somewhat more stable conditions, but when the sun was increasingly covered by some clouds, the race committee sent us out on the water shortly before noon.

With a nice but gusty wind from the south, a total of 4 races were completed. But with the wind shifting continuously to the right and not allowing for a proper race-course, the race committee sent us back to land in the hope of a more southerly wind direction later on. Unfortunately, this this hoped-for wind shift was not coming, so the 5th race for this day was cancelled, which gave some crews the welcomed opportunity to repair some minor damage on their boats.

GER824 (Wetfeet) coped best with the demanding wind conditions of the first day and clearly led the intermediate ranking with four race wins, ahead of SUI825 (shensu), who took their scratch result in the second race with an 8th place.

After a sympathetic dinner in the sailing club and some thunderstorms during the night, Sunday morning greeted us again with a wind from the south, but with lower clouds repeatedly bringing wind shifts and rays of sunshine alternating with occasional drizzle. Consequently, the setup of a proper race-course on this small lake turned out to be extremely challenging. After start line and course marks had to be adjusted to the wind changes over and over again, we were finally able to complete four fair races on Sunday with 2-4 Bft. mostly southerly winds. Here, GER824 and SUI825 shared the lead with two race wins each.

With a total of six race victories and a 3rd place as a scratch result, Eckhard Kaller and his crew on GER824 were able to clearly win this race. Jarmo Wieland and crew on SUI825 took the honorable 2nd place, followed by Thomas Begher on GER832. In the following ranks, the scores after 8 races were quite close to each other, demonstrating the fact that a consistent performance over 8 races in these demanding conditions was reserved for a few teams only.

Even though the Longtze Regatta on Lake Garda in September is known to be the highlight of the season, this year's regatta weekend in St. Moritz is in no way inferior. The beautiful field of 13 international participants, the challenging but exciting wind conditions, the unique scenery of the Engadin and, last but not least, the exemplary and always sympathetic commitment of the Race Committee of the St. Moritz Sailing Club contributed to this  great event - thank you very much!
